Cred singing the greatest childrens song at the Lake of the Ozarks in 2005:
Gray Squirrel, gray squirrel
Swish your bushy tail.
Gray Squirrel, gray squirrel
Swish your bushy tail.
Wrinkle up your funny nose,
Put a nut between your toes.
Gray Squirrel, Gray Squirrel
Swish your bushy tail.

Tennessee Grey Eagle on the Mandolin
This song can be found on the "Traditional Fiddle Music of the Ozarks, Vol. 3: Down in the Border Counties by Rounder" (CD# 0437) as fiddled by Jim Herd.
As noted on the record liner: The CD,"...concentrates on Taney and Ozark counties in southern Missouri up against the Arkansas state line...[and that]...the Ozarks are home to some of the best traditional fiddle music to be found in America, but it's rarely heard outside the region".
You can also hear this tune on the Voyager Recordings CD# 340: "Jim Herd, Old Time Ozark Fiddling".
(see www.VoyagerRecords.com)
I picked my version of the song up off a YouTube video of Jim fiddling the song while being backed up by Phil and Vivian Williams and their band.
It is hard to say who wrote this song and when -- other than being a traditional tune from that Ozark region. Maybe it is a version of the better known, and pretty tricky, fiddle tune called just "Grey Eagle".
It is possible because "Grey Eagle" itself has about as many versions as there are fiddlers -- but in my opinion there is not too much similarity between these two "Eagle tunes".
I intend soon to post my own version of "Grey Eagle" also -- mine is copied from a Bill Monroe recording of it.
