PVCC Students Win Canstruction®
and Help Fight Hunger
Canstruction EntryCharlottesville, Va. - An impressive model of Monticello built with cans of food enabled Piedmont Virginia Community College students to win the local Canstruction® competition, a design/build event held last week throughout North America to fight hunger. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, local organizer of the event, announced the winner Nov. 8 at Fashion Square Mall where contest entries are displayed until Nov. 21.
PVCC students began building the model at 5 a.m. Nov. 5 and were finished in under four hours. It required approximately 3,000 cans of food stacked 10-cans high - a design determined though the students blueprints and mathematical computations.
Members of PVCCs team are SciTE scholars - top engineering, computer science or science students at PVCC who are recipients of scholarships from the National Science Foundation. They are: Steven Bronder, Edna Caruso, James Coles, Matthew Coles, Kedy Edme, Joseph Falvella, Bobby Fincham, Samantha Gray, David Griffin, William Joyner, Abhinash Khanal, Joseph King, Derek McVay, Jeffrey Mo, Michael Montgomery, Van Ni and Derek Ramsay.
Engineering Program Liaison Andrew Renshaw, the team leader, along with Assistant Professor of Engineering Ali Bouabid and Instructor of Computer Science David DuVall-Early worked with the students to build a prototype of Monticello before the students constructed the final project.
