Before the Div. 2 South Sectional girls soccer tourney ever began, Oliver Ames coach Britt Sellmayer felt that Duxbury was a team coming on.
Boy, was he right.
The Green Dragons worked their way past two league champions in the sectional, and on Sunday, added defending Div. 2 state champion Oliver Ames to their list of accomplishments with a 1-0 win in their Div. 2 South Sectional championship game at Weymouth High School.
Unfortunately, said Sellmayer. I was right. (Duxbury Highs) Emerson Coleman is a great coach and it takes a while for a team to get used to their coach.
(Former Duxbury girls soccer coach) Pat Shea was a great coach, but Duxbury defeated (then undefeated) Whitman-Hanson at the end of the year and they have been coming on. They know what they have to do. They are finding a way to win.
Coleman, who was the longtime boys coach at Plymouth-Carver, Plymouth and Plymouth North, won the state title in 1986 and took his team to the Eastern Mass. finals in 1996 and 1998. He took over for the retired Pat Shea at Duxbury in August.
In the tournament, Duxbury defeated both, Tri-Valley League champion Holliston and Bay State Herget Div. winner Wellesley, in its last two games to reach Sundays championship game.
We talk about living to play another day, said Coleman. We are going to scrap and we are going to fight and if we get the winning goal, we move on.
The girls are having a great tournament run and they are starting to believe in themselves. I stopped coaching in 1998 and this is my first coaching job since then and Britt is right, it is an adjustment (putting in his system), but we have been trying to put it in all season.
The Dragons took advantage of their chance against a gusty wind in the first half and held off the Tigers the rest of the way.
Emily Gallagher picked up a loose ball and buried a shot into the near corner from 12 yards out for the games only goal with 13:31 left in the first half.
The Duxbury defense made sure that the one goal stood up. The Dragons defense and goalie Emily Brook stopped every scoring chance Oliver Ames threw at them.
