HYANNIS — The 8:20 a.m. Hy-Line high-speed ferry from Oak Bluffs had just rounded Dunbar Point by Kalmus Beach Park yesterday when the vessel's captain noticed smoke at the stern.
At that time "there were no flames," Philip Scudder, one of the ferry line owners and its marketing director, said yesterday. "There was no excessive heat. There was a definite smoke smell and visible smoke."

The fire, in the starboard engine room, sent smoke pouring through the vessel as it pulled into the Ocean Street docks shortly after 9 a.m. .
The six passengers onboard made it off safely, but the four crew members, including Capt. Kerry Doon, were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, said Hyannis Fire Chief Harold Brunelle.
One firefighter was treated for a shoulder injury, Brunelle said. All five patients were treated and released, according to a spokesman for Cape Cod Hospital.

HYANNIS, MA- Sen. Edward Kennedy will be sailing the seas off the coast of Florida during Congressional breaks this winter, according to a spokesman from his staff.
His sailboat, the Mya, a familiar sight in Nantucket Sound, was pulled from the water and today loaded on a trailer for the trip from Cape Cod to a marina in the Sunshine State.

More on the Kennedy family of Hyannisport Kennedy spokesman Keith Maley said in an e-mail this morning that Kennedy will spend Thanksgiving at the family compound in Hyannisport, a longtime family tradition.
An avid sailor, the Massachusetts Democrat spent many hours this summer aboard the Mya while recuperating from chemotherapy and radiation therapy following surgery for a brain tumor in May at the Duke University Medical Center.
In fact, on his first day back on the Cape after undergoing that surgery, Kennedy, his wife and their two dogs Splash and Sunny, boarded the Mya - a 50-foot-long Concordia schooner - for a sail across Nantucket Sound.
Less than two weeks later the Senator sailed his boat in the 37th annual Figawi, a boat race between Hyannis and Nantucket. With his wife Victoria Reggie Kennedy and Sen. Chirstopher Dodd, D-Conn., aboard, Kennedy brought the Mya in second in the five-boat division. His time over the 19.7-mile course was 1 hour and 54 minutes.

Police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said an initial investigation indicates a pickup truck was hit by a car while crossing the road. The truck then hit the school van from the Crystal Gardens Child Care Center.
A woman in the pickup truck was reportedly unconscious after the crash, and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital.
